Our
Operations
Thomas Drive
Volunteer Fire Department was founded April
18th, 1972 by Captain Tom B. Corely. Since
being founded, we have become a combination
department. Being as such, we are staffed
around the clock. At the present time, we
have three shifts of Career personnel and,
just recently, we have been blessed with
three career firefighters per shift.
Our volunteer
roster usually stays around twenty or so,
our rank structure, like every department,
is unique. Starting with the Fire Chief, who
is voted in annually, the Deputy Chief,
voted annually, and assistant chief, who is
also voted in annually. We have as few as
one or as many as three Lieutenants. Next,
in line, is the Safety Officer, charged with
the responsibility of making sure all of us
nozzle heads don't get too worked up, or we
aren't in the way of a falling wall, and
most importantly, keeping us hydrated! From
the Safety officer, we move on down to the
rank of Firefighter. One can become a
firefighter after Six Months to One Year of
probation, learning how to operate every
single piece of basic firefighting
equipment, learning our apparatus, and
proving to the department that he or she can
be counted on. If a seasoned firefighter
decides to make a department change, either
from moving down to Panama City Beach, or an
inner-county transfer, their probationary
period
